Teaching

Over the years I have been fortunate to teach astrology in a number of different settings. I am very grateful to Richard Tarnas who provided me with my first opportunities in learning to be an effective teacher. He invited me to assist with several of his CIIS courses, offering outside tutorials to his students, and occasionally substitute teaching for him when he was unavailable. In 2001 I was invited to teach a six-day Grof training module in Australia, which I called “The Power of Archetype.” This module explored the ways astrology can be seen as a spiritual discipline, and also explored the ways astrology and breathwork support and amplify each other. I was fortunate to teach this module several more times: in Argentina, Spain and twice here in the United States, and I am also scheduled to teach it two more times in 2012, both in England and Tasmania, Australia.

In 2002 I taught a weekly astrology class in San Francisco over a 15-week period. The class was modeled after Richard Tarnas’ practicum course “Psyche and Cosmos II.” Participants all had each other’s natal charts, and we followed closely and reported in about our transits each week. During this class I also gave weekly presentations on my current archetypal fascinations. I did several presentations on current news stories and how they related to what was in the sky; gave a presentation on Stephen Spielberg and played film clips representative of his natal chart; gave a presentation on the famous “Rumble in the Jungle,” looking at Muhammad Ali’s, and George Foreman’s charts and transits for the fight; presented an analysis of Shakleton’s famous journey to Antarctica; and several other interesting presentations.

In 2004 I was invited to speak at the Sixteenth International Transpersonal Conference in Palm Springs, and I gave a talk titled “The Joy of Astrology: Living the Life Archetypal.” The conference was wonderful, and my talk was well received. If you are interested in purchasing a taped copy of the talk, you can do so through Conference Recording Services. Here’s a link: www.ConferenceRecording.com (just type in my last name, and the talk will come up).

More recently, I have begun teaching as a faculty member for the newly formed Institute of Archetypal Cosmology. We taught the first round of classes in the spring of 2011, and plan to teach another round in 2012. Initially, the plan is to offer foundational courses in archetypal astrology to students here in the San Francisco Bay Area, and then to make the video recordings of these classes available over the internet. The Institute's website is not fully available yet, but there is a placeholder website at www.archetypalcosmology.org that should be more functional soon. We have decided to wait until after the second round of teaching (hopefully sometime in the spring of 2012) to make the videos available online, but for now if you are interested in being placed on the institute's mailing list, please contact Jessica Garfield-Kabbara at [email protected]

In 2011 I gave an evening lecture combined with a one-day workshop for the Atlanta Jung Society. In the evening talk I gave an introduction to archetypal astrology, and then I used the natal chart of Carl Jung, and the time period in his life when he was working on the Red Book, as an illustrative example. For the one-day workshop we looked at the ten planetary archetypes in greater depth, explored how Stan Grof's concept of "COEX systems" is relevant to astrology, looked at the chart and transits of participant volunteers, and then we concluded with examples of astrological archetypes as experienced through music. I had a wonderful experience teaching in Atlanta, and I hope to offer similar workshops in the future.

I have also been invited several times to deliver brief introductory lectures to private groups or classes. For one such class I traveled by car several hours to give a free talk, with the arrangement that a number of people attending the talk would be meeting with me for astrological consultations. If you wish to sponsor me for such a talk, please contact me to make arrangements.

Teaching in 2012

Thursday February 23rd, 2012. Evening lecture for the San Francisco Astrological Society: The Man Who Killed Pluto.

I am very happy to announce that I will be offering this evening talk, in which I will be exploring the chart and transits of astronomer Mike Brown, who is the person most responsible for the demotion of Pluto from full-planet status.

For more information, please visit the San Francisco Astrological Society Website

I am also very happy to announce that I will be returning to teach my module, "The Power of Archetype: Integrating Astrology and Holotropic Breathwork" for Grof Transpersonal Training twice in 2012: in both Australia and in England.

July 10-15 2012: Six-day Astrology and Holotropic Breathwork Module. Tasmania, Australia.

September 4-9 2012: Six-day Astrology and Holotropic Breathwork Module. Somerset, England.

This six day experiential workshop will combine both a solid foundation in the practice of archetypal astrology along with the opportunity to experience the Holotropic Breathwork. It is not necessary to be enrolled in the training to sign up for this workshop. It is also not necessary to have any experience with astrology. The teaching will be geared so that both beginners as well as those with more experience with astrology will benefit.

For more information, and for exact dates as they become available, please visit the Grof website here.

Institute of Archetypal Cosmology Teaching

We launched this new institute in 2011, and the first round of classes were a great success. I helped Richard Tarnas, Stanislav Grof, and several of their senior students with the teaching of the first series of foundational classes in archetypal astrology, and they were very well received. The plan was to make the videos of of the classes available for sale over the internet, but we decided that we wanted to first refine the structure of the course, and record another round of classes before making the videos available. The tentative plan is to offer the next round of classes in the spring of 2012 for students who live in the San Francisco Bay Area, and then the videos should be available soon after that. The exact dates are not yet available, but please stay tuned to this space for updates, or you can contact Jessica Garfield-Kabbara at [email protected] to be placed on the institute's email list.

Mentoring

Several of my astrological clients over the years have asked me to mentor them in their personal studies of astrology. I have always enjoyed doing this, and would be available to work with anyone who wants to go deeper into the practice of archetypal astrology. I can work with you either in-person in San Francisco or over the telephone, and will design a course of study suited to your individual needs. My only requirement is that you have had an initial astrological consultation with me prior to beginning the mentorship. This will allow us to get to know each other, and will also give you a sense for my approach to astrology.

My fee for mentorship is $150 for a 90 minute session. Please contact me for more details.
